Sparkling Masterpieces – Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend

By Barbara Korp
Omega-Lady-Speedmaster-2-1

Marilyn Monroe knew it, and you probably do too: diamonds are a girl’s best friend. I mean, is there really any woman out there who can resist the one-of-a-kind glitz of diamonds? It’s no wonder we like to wear them on our watches. Diamond watches are both timepieces and jewelry, which makes them a great gift for those special occasions. Whether understated as watch indices, or adding a beautiful sparkle to a watch’s bezel, join us as we take a look at the different ways the world’s most famous watchmakers wow us with diamonds.

Cartier Santos Demoiselle

“When you hear “”diamond watch,”” you probably think of a small quartz timepiece with a diamond bezel. Understandably so, because that’s a great place for these precious jewels to sparkle, like you’ll see on a classic like the Cartier Santos Demoiselle. When you look at this timepiece, it might be hard to believe that the first Cartier Santos was a pilot’s watch. After all, the Demoiselle is a second-to-none dress watch. Its quartz movement keeps this watch petite, flat, and elegant. It by the way looks even classier in rose gold. And because Cartier is also a master jeweler, the diamonds on this watch are set with the finest touch of class and harmony. Haute horlogerie together with haute joaillerie – this watch gorgeously combines the best of both of these worlds.

Omega Speedmaster Ladies Chronograph

Think that diamonds make a watch too blingy for everyday wear? We’ve got something that’s going to make you re-think that. There are all kinds of classic sports watches these days that you’ll find in women’s sizes and with diamond bezels. The legendary Omega Speedmaster is one of them. Its 38-mm case size fits and looks fantastic on smaller wrists. Its diamond bezel and Omega’s proprietary Sedna gold make it a great choice for all special occasions, while its distinctive Speedmaster design will make you want to have it on for daily wear as well. For the elegant lady and powerful woman like you who can do it all, the Omega Speedmaster Ladies Chronograph is the perfect choice.

Piaget Limelight

“Looking for a watch that’s going to make a splash at special occasions? The best place to look is with a brand that is as famous for its jewelry as it is for its watches – like Piaget. Their Limelight collection features extravagant timepieces with unforgettable designs. Their real magic however, is seen with the cut-down diamond settings on their bezels and elongated, asymmetric lugs. Here, material is cut away around each diamond, achieving a unique passing-through and reflection of light, and an amazing diamond glimmer that lets the beauty of these watches dazzle their beholder.

Bulgari Serpenti Tubogas

The Bulgari Serpenti collection first appeared in the 1940s, and these timepieces are just as sought-after today as they were back then. Its success is due to two reasons. For starters, the symbolic power of snakes has fascinated humankind for millennia, which is why these sometimes dangerous, albeit beautiful animals have often been seen gracing jewelry. The iconic Tubogas bracelet also has plenty to do with this watch’s popularity. Originally inspired by a corrugated pressurized gas pipe, these bracelets are unique not only in their shape, but in their wearing experience as well. And the Bulgari Serpenti Tubogas is so extravagant, for me, it’s unthinkable to select a model without diamonds on its bezel. This watch effortlessly combines Cleopatra style with avant-garde to infuse the right touch of glamor into every one of life’s moments – with the most beautiful of all jewels, of course.

Zenith Defy Midnight

Defy was always Zenith’s showpiece collection – watches with the latest caliber technology, and modern materials. The past few years have also seen Zenith create watches exclusively for women. The first series of these, the Zenith Defy Midnight, remains my favorite to this day, and is a real head-turner. Its vertical gradient blue dial has painted stars on it, along with diamond indices, reminiscent of a starry night sky. Now, a Zenith watch would typically grab my attention because of its caliber, and this watch is no exception with its in-house ELITE movement. But for now, I’m happy to simply continue gazing at these dazzling, gorgeous stars.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Rendez-Vous Dazzling Shooting Star

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Rendez-Vous collection is famous for its unique, diamond-studded women’s watches. In 2022, and in keeping with the watchmaker’s “The Stellar Odyssey” theme, this collection was expanded to include a special edition piece: the Rendez-Vous Dazzling Shooting Star. With it, Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced a never-before-seen complication: the shooting star. You read that right: four to six times an hour, a shooting star makes its way across the starry, deep-blue aventurine dial. This spectacle occurs spontaneously as a result of the movement of the wearer, or on demand by turning the watch’s crown. This cosmic event is heightened by the diamonds on the dial and bezel. Romantic, secretive, and something entirely new. With the Rendez-Vous Dazzling Shooting Star, Jaeger-LeCoultre once again shows why they are a leader in the world of haute horlogerie.

IWC Portofino Automatic Day and Night

“Another heavenly watch, but one that is much more suited for everyday wear, is the IWC Portofino Automatic Day and Night. Like all watches in the Portofino line, this is the perfect dress watch that just exudes sheer elegance. This model is a mere 34 mm wide, and features a day-night complication, with the dial displaying the never-ending solar and lunar cycles on the disc at 6 o’clock: a bright shining sun at noon, and the moon at midnight, surrounded by stars. Notice the subtle use of diamonds as indices; their combination with the golden hands and bar indices achieves a minimalistic, elegant style that is simply stunning for everyday wear. But seriously, were you expecting anything less from a Portofino?

Rolex Datejust 31 Floral Motif Diamond Dial

If you’re looking for a diamond watch, you just know you’re going to be coming across a Rolex or two. Whether it’s a Rolex Daytona with diamond indices, or a Datejust with a diamond bezel, many Rolex models are available with this gorgeous jewel. The Rolex Datejust 31 Floral Motif Diamond Dial however integrates diamonds into its watch in a way never seen before. The flowers on its dial are a result of a high-tech finishing technique, and deliver an amazing effect: The 24 diamonds of varying sizes set into the center of these flowers bring them to life, dazzling with their beautiful shine and sparkle. Take your pick of a diamond bezel for special occasions, or a classic fluted bezel for evening outings – this floral majesty will never wilt, but wow us with sparkling beauty forevermore.

Chopard Happy Sport

Diamonds that aren’t set into the dial, but that float above it? That’s the Chopard Happy Sport, made possible by two sapphire crystals between which the Happy Diamonds freely move about. Upon its release in 1993, this model was the first watch to ever combine diamonds with stainless steel. Today, the Chopard Happy Sport is available in a number of different sizes and varieties. What they all share is their desire to instill joy in their wearers. Try it for yourself: glance down at your Chopard Happy Sport, let the diamonds dance for you, and see if you too don’t feel a smile coming across your face. You’re going to love the joy this watch brings to your daily life.

Patek Philippe World Time

Did you do a double-take when you saw the Patek Philippe World Time on this list? No diamonds on this watch – at first glance at least. This model after all is not famous for precious gems. The star here is of course the world time complication that Patek Philippe perfected and masterfully fit onto the dial. But like every platinum watch Patek Philippe creates, it has a diamond set into the outer side of the watch case at the 6 o’clock position (bend the leather strap down as needed to spot it). A hidden diamond as a seal of unmatched quality, and an understatement that makes quite the statement. This is anything but a mere diamond in the rough, and a watch that is definitely a best friend to everyone, not just the girls.

About the Author

Barbara Korp

The moment I learned that watches were a lot more than just simple jewelry, I was hooked; I become enamored with the elegance of timekeeping. But there was one small hitch: most models were just too big for me to wear! That didn't discourage me, however. In fact, I developed quite a niche interest.
